Dental Crowns

What is a Dental Crown?

Dental crowns are used to fill gaps and restore your smile when you have damaged or missing teeth. A crown will also help you chew and bite much better and avoid injury when eating. You will also digest food much better and boost your self-esteem.

Essentially, a crown covers the top of your tooth to restore the tooth’s normal size, shape, and function. The main objective of the crown is to make your tooth stronger and improve aesthetic appeal.

Why Do You Need a Crown?

A crown may be needed for any of the following reasons:

  • You have missing teeth due to an injury and a bridge is being placed
  • You have a huge cavity that cannot be filled
  • You want to disguise a dental implant
  • You want to cover a badly shaped or discolored tooth in order to keep smiling confidently
  • You have had a root canal treatment and you want to protect the tooth that is restored after the treatment

How is a Dental Crown Formed?

Several different types of materials are used to make crowns. These include ceramic, metal alloys, composite resin, porcelain or a combination of these materials. During the crown making process, the material being utilized is colored to match the natural shade of the teeth.

Dr. Holser will always look to create a crown that fits comfortably in your mouth and looks natural. When selecting the material to be used to make the crown, he will consider the position of the gum tissue, the location where the tooth needs a crown, the preference of the patient, the function, and the number of teeth that are visible when you smile.

How is a Crown Placed?

Placing a crown requires two dental visits. Dr. Holser will first prepare the tooth by ensuring the outer part of the tooth is removed for the crown to fit. If there is any tooth decay, it is removed. If there is an extra need to support the crown, he will build the tooth’s core.

Then, a tooth impression will be made. It is used as an exact model for the crown.

A temporary crown will be placed while you wait for the permanent crown to be ready. During the time you have the temporary crown, avoid drinking hot or cold beverages because this tooth can be highly sensitive to temperature. Exposure to ice-cream, hot water or the likes can damage your tooth.

When the permanent crown is ready, it is placed on the site and the necessary fit adjustments are done. After the process is complete and you are satisfied with how the tooth looks, the crown is cemented on the site, and you have a brand new looking tooth.
